Earth Fiction

2022

These renders depict virtual environments composed of aesthetically unaltered photogrammetry scans of new and old concrete sculptures. Some of the ground elements originate from Tiny Terrain (2019), a body of work based on a top-down perspective of imagined landscapes that were always intended to be larger than their physical limit.

By integrating concrete objects into a virtual space, their material properties are subverted. Once virtualized, the constraints of gravity, hardness, and weight are removed.

In these rendered landscapes, ceramic and concrete pieces appear to “sprout” from the ground. Multiple elements conjoin and branch outward, developing an organic quality reminiscent of coral formations.

Earth Fiction plays on the term Virtual World. The phrase Earth Fiction suggests a more whimsical, imagination-driven approach, contrasting the technological sterility often associated with virtual worlds. These images are closer to dreamscapes than to video game environments.
